Police: Man's interest in undies leads to arrest
DANVILLE -- Police charged a Berwick man Thursday with harassing women by calling them and asking for their bra and panty sizes.
The man, David C. English, 53, of Lark Drive, denied the allegations, Mahoning Township police said. He said someone had been using his phone illegally.
In turn, police said they received two complaints and found that English might have made as many as 117 such calls. They filed seven harassment charges against English, who was jailed in lieu of $2,500 bail by District Judge Craig Long, of Catawissa.
According to court documents, Mahoning Township resident Tammy Wertz reported she received a call around 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 10.
The caller said he was calling from the Buckhorn Truck Stop on behalf of Victoria's Secret, and that Wertz had been selected to receive free bras, underwear and nightgowns.
The caller said he needed to know her sizes and preferred styles to send the merchandise, Wertz told police.
Wertz had the call traced and provided the information to township police.
Janet Vought, another township resident, also complained to police, saying she had received a similar call at 3:30 p.m. the same day.
Residents in Scott Township, Bloomsburg, Montour Township and Catawissa were also targeted, police said.
Upon further investigation, police said the calls were traced and a total of 117 were made to various numbers.
Police discovered the phone and English at his mother's residence Thursday morning. According to reports, he told police someone else had been using his phone. He also told police the phone is always at his mother's residence, and he never uses it.
