TREVORTON -- A 51-year-old Harrisburg man was injured when he was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle on Monday afternoon while riding at the "Flats" off Gap Road in Zerbe Township, Northumberland County, authorities said.

Zerbe Township police officer Sean Packard said David Hartman was attempting to drive up a steep hill when his ATV overturned. He had a permit to ride on the private coal lands east of Trevorton.

With Hartman was his son, who was operating another ATV in the same area.

The Flats is a well known mountainous area of the township, popular with ATV owners.

Hartman was taken to Shamokin Area Community Hospital and later flown by helicopter to the Hershey Medical Center, which he was listed in fair condition Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

Assisting Zerbe Township police at the scene were fire and rescue personnel from Trevorton.
