RICHFIELD -- For the past year, shooting victim Jeffrey E. Stock lived in a rented house nestled in a small hill off Mill Road with his live-in companion.
Homeowner Lorraine Renninger said Stock, 46, and his longtime companion, Brenda Soder, were pleasant and took care of the property in West Perry Township, Snyder County.
"She kept a neat home and, boy, he worked the lawn," Renninger said Tuesday.
Renninger said she was shocked to learn Stock was shot to death on the porch of the home late Saturday.
"My brother-in-law drove by the house and saw all the cops there," she said, describing the scene at the two-story house Sunday morning. "That's how we learned about it."
Authorities said Stock was shot once in the abdomen at 10:20 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 11:37 p.m. at Lewistown Hospital.
State police at Selinsgrove and District Attorney Michael Sholley are releasing few details of the shooting while they investigate who fired the fatal shot and why.
Although there were "a few" people in the house at the time of the shooting, investigators aren't saying how many or whether anyone witnessed the crime.
A weapon has still not been recovered and police continue to search the vicinity for evidence.
Soder has moved to a relative's house during the investigation and Renninger said she's confident the police are doing all they can to solve Stock's homicide.
"They're crawling all over the property," she said.
