MILTON -- A downtown business that closed after less than three months prompted comment from a council member and the borough manager during Wednesday's Borough Council meeting.
Ken Johnson said he was "personally embarrassed" that the business shut down so quickly and wondered if the owners had taken advantage of resources that could have helped them develop a workable business plan.
When Chuck Beck, borough manager, said it was his impression that The Improved Milton Experience organization could have helped, Johnson agreed.
"It's not your job or mine, but it is a black eye for the community," he said.
Johnson said potential businesses should be encouraged to seek help from TIME or university groups that assist small businesses.
"We weren't aware they were going to close until the decision was already made," Beck said.
"I just hope we can prevent this from happening in the future," Johnson said.
In other business, Beck announced the annual spring cleanup would take place next week, starting on Monday. The pickup is for leaves, garden plants and brush. No bushes with roots or tree stumps will be accepted.
Limbs and brush must be placed at curbside by 7 a.m., and leaves and garden plants must be bagged and separated from limbs and brush.
The following schedule will be kept: Monday, 1st Ward; Tuesday, 2nd Ward; Wednesday, 3rd Ward; Thursday, 4th Ward, and Friday, 5th Ward. Pickup will be made rain or shine.
The council also gave final approval to the 2008 Community Development Block Grant of $125,456 for continued renovations in Brown Avenue Park.
Council members Judd Clemens, Jason Budman and Linda Meckley were appointed to the community pool committee.
Council members Charles Ormsby and Denise Ulmer were absent.
