RIVERSIDE -- Grief, and a desperate need for answers in their youngest son's death in a vehicle accident Jan. 1, are prompting Stan and Ginny Lecatsas to consider hiring a psychic.
They're not mystical, but are willing to do whatever possible to get to the bottom of what happened the day their son, Travis M. Lecatsas, lost control of his Mitsubishi Eclipse on Route 11 in Point Township and crashed.
Fifteen days later, the 22-year-old died without ever regaining consciousness.
The Lecatsas say their grief was heightened by reports their son had been at fault because he was racing another vehicle at the time of the accident.
Travis had only recently gotten his license back after losing it for speeding violations, and that morning, because of poor road conditions, had asked his mother for a ride to Sunbury to attend drug court treatment, Ginny Lecatsas said.
"He would not have jeopardized his license by drag racing," she insists.
Although he'd been in trouble with the law before, Travis had been making great strides in treatment, enjoyed the people he was meeting in the Northumberland County Court program, was receiving job training and was getting his life on track.
"Because Travis had changed his life and found a purpose to live, he needs to be vindicated," his mother said.
Choking back tears, Stan Lecatsas added, "We'll never rest until we know what happened. Right now, I'm a lost soul."
Early police reports said Lecatsas may have been racing another motorist when the crash occurred.
Point Township police said they were investigating witness reports that an unidentified driver in a black Pontiac Grand Prix, who may have been racing Lecatsas, returned to the crash site and drove off without stopping.
The Lecatsases said they received calls from several people that a male motorist who was present at the accident scene, whom they have identified, was "acting suspicious" afterward.
They are certain their son was driven off the road and urged police to investigate, but believe the case has been closed.
Point Township police did not respond to calls from The Daily Item.
Refusing to let it go, the Lecatsases hired private investigator Degg Stark, a former area police officer. Stark declined to comment on the case.
