Police chief welcomes psychic's help

NORTHUMBERLAND -- Point Township Police Chief Joshua Van Kirk said officers have exhausted all leads in the investigation of the Dec. 31 crash that killed Travis M. Lecatsas and welcome new information, even tips provided by a psychic.

"We haven't ever worked with a psychic, but a young man was killed in an accident on our highway, and obviously we'll accept any information if something turns up," Van Kirk said Monday.

He was responding to reports that Lecatsas' parents, Stan and Ginny Lecatsas, of Riverside, had hired private investigator Degg Stark and intend to hire a psychic detective in an attempt to find out what caused their 22-year-old son to crash his Mitsubishi Eclipse on Route 11. He died 15 days later as a result of injuries suffered in the accident.

Witnesses told police that Lecatsas and another motorist may have been racing and that the driver of a black Pontiac Grand Prix was involved.

The Lecatsas said they know of one man believed to have been in the area who was said by others to have acted suspiciously following the crash. However, the grieving couple believe township police did not aggressively pursue the leads and have closed the investigation.

Not so, said Van Kirk.

"Closed is not an accurate term," he said.

The police tried unsuccessfully to find the driver of the Pontiac or the vehicle, though they did follow several "loose" leads, including interviewing the person identified as suspicious who denied being in the area of the crash.

Van Kirk said investigators also checked with Danville police about the possibility of cameras capturing a license plate at Routes 11 and 54 shortly before the crash, but learned that sensors, not cameras, are used.

Each lead was followed, he said, but the possibility of someone else, even a psychic, uncovering details that could help move the investigation forward is welcome, the chief said.
