MOUNT CARMEL -- A 16-year-old girl was injured Saturday night when the sport-utility vehicle she was riding in flipped over on Route 54 .
Mount Carmel Township Police said Luke Reber, 19, Schuylkill Haven, was driving east on 54 by the Strong connector -- where 54 intersects with Brennans Farm Road -- around 7:30 p.m. and tried to beat the light as it turned red.
A 17-year-old Kulpmont girl coming off Brennans Farm Road got the green light and drove her 1998 Nissan sedan into the intersection, clipping the back end of Reber's 1995 Land Rover, police said.
The Land Rover spun out of control and flipped onto its roof. The 16-year-old girl, of Locust Gap, was thrown from the vehicle. Police said she broke her foot and injured her spine.
Township police requested her name not be released. She was listed in fair condition at Geisinger Medical Center Sunday night.
Reber and another passenger, 19-year-old Kevin Peiffer, also sustained injuries, but refused treatment.
Peiffer was charged with underage drinking, police said, and charges are pending against Reber for driving under the influence.
The driver of the Nissan was not injured, police said.
Township police were assisted at the scene by Stonington State Police, Kulpmont Police, Mount Carmel Rescue Squad and Ambulance and Beaverdale Fire Company.
