MIFFLINBURG -- Troy Bowersox enjoys jogging in the Limestone Township countryside with his two young sons, hoping some day to host a community five-kilometer race on those same roads.

The first step will be taken next week when Bowersox and his fellow township supervisors plan to adopt an ordinance establishing a recreation authority, which would help identify recreational opportunities, manage the township's recreation area along Penns Creek and coordinate community events like a 5K race along Penns Creek Road.

Bowersox said all that's left is to fill the four seats on the five-member authority with residents. He will join the residents when the authority is up and running.

"People really enjoy swimming, kayaking and having picnics at our recreation area," he said. "This will enable us to really expand on that interest and create more community activities and opportunities. Plus, we have a lot of people ask to reserve the (recreation area) pavilions, and right now, we don't have anything in place to manage the two pavilions. It's more of a first-come, first-serve situation."

Bowersox said there also is hope the township can build a community recreation building and create other recreational areas throughout the township.

"We felt establishing a recreation authority would be a good place to start," said Bowersox, adding residents interested in serving on the authority may contact him at bear@ptd.net.

The supervisors plan to vote on establishing the authority during a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the township municipal building, 10655 Route 304, Mifflinburg.
