Bikers brave rain for Reed memorial ride

— NORTHUMBERLAND -- For a girl who died so young, Marlee Reed has made quite a difference in the Central Susquehanna Valley.
Five years after the 4-year-old was killed by her stepfather, Brentt Sherwood, Donna and Melvin Reed are keeping the memory of their granddaughter alive through the foundation they created in her memory, the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse and their annual fundraiser, the Marlee Reed Memorial Ride.
And while the number of participants in this year's ride was down from more than 300 to 51 because of a steady rain all Sunday afternoon, $1,395 was raised by the Bikers Against Child Abuse chapter.
The proceeds benefit charities and organizations that help victims of child abuse.
"That's more money than we thought we would raise today, considering the weather," Donna Reed said.
Those who did ride in the rain refused to let it wash away their enthusiasm for the event and the cause.
Ronald Baker, of Middleburg, and his motorcycle-riding dog, Nana, have participated in four of the five rides. "I wouldn't miss this for anything," he said.
"I believe in supporting the cause and not letting anyone forget about Marlee," he said.
Bill Markel, a member of the Wild Hares Club, Middleburg, also was there to help raise awareness about child abuse. "Her story has touched me," he said.
But he also participates to "just have some fun with my friends." This was his third year riding in the event.
Donald Keeley, of Northumberland, has participated every year because of the importance of the cause. "Look around you. Look at all the kids. They are precious. We all have to do our part to prevent abuse," he said.
Sunday's ride was 105 miles long, beginning at American Legion Post 44, Route 11. The riders went to the PPL Preserve, near Washingtonville, for a break before going on to the cemetery in Kulpmont where Marlee is buried. The ride ended at the Sunbury Social Club.
The rock band Marlee Rose provided music in the pavilion area at the social club as the race concluded.
Those who couldn't attend Sunday's ride but would like to contribute to the cause may send checks made out to Bikers Against Child Abuse, 651 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
