PAXINOS -- A slippery curve on Irish Valley Road briefly turned Chanae Kohan's 2003 Jeep Liberty into an airplane and then a boat Monday morning.

The 19-year-old Shamokin woman was southbound on Irish Valley Road, just off Route 61, at 11 a.m., headed to a friend's home to watch a movie when she lost control of her Jeep on a curve and crashed into a shallow creek known as Benny's Run.

Her boyfriend, Mark Staner, of Shamokin, was in the passenger seat.

"I think I hydroplaned when we came around the corner. We just flipped over," she said.

Kohan said she didn't think she was traveling too fast, but couldn't say how fast she was driving.

Stonington Fire Company Chief Kerry Yordy said it appeared the SUV was airborne about 12 feet before landing on its passenger side in the stream.

Staner said he got out of the SUV first by climbing through the rear driver's side door and then helped Kohan out.

Passersby called for help and Kohan, clutching her cell phone, called her grandmother, Diane Kohan, of Elysburg, to get her father's work number.

Diane Kohan rushed to the accident site and was relieved to see her granddaughter and Staner were uninjured.

"I always told her to be careful when it rains," the older woman said.

Kohan, who was not wearing a seat belt, was also relieved that no one was harmed.

But the shaken and teary-eyed young woman couldn't keep her eyes off of the overturned vehicle.

"I'm sad. I own it," she said.

Fire officials from Stonington, Elysburg and Overlook placed booms and pads in the water to collect oil that spilled from the vehicle.
