Judge extends Duffy's vacation from procreation

SUNBURY -- Duffy, a prize-winning French bulldog, remains off the breeding market pending another medical examination to determine if he's well enough to procreate.

Susan Serovich, of Kulpmont, filed a petition to stop the Northumberland County court from giving Karen Robertson, of Paxinos, access to the 6-year-old show dog for breeding purposes due to an alleged infection.

On Monday, Serovich's attorney, David Miller, of Frackville, told Judge Charles H. Saylor the dog has a medical condition that prevents him from being used for breeding.

Robertson, who once owned Duffy, gave him to Serovich in October 2006 with the understanding she would be able to breed the animal for two more years.

The judge ruled that semen samples will not be collected from the dog until the dispute is addressed at a June 16 bench trial.

In the meantime, Saylor ordered Duffy to be examined by a West Chester veterinarian on Thursday.

Money is at the heart of the issue. Robertson testified at a prior court hearing that she is paid $1,000 for Duffy's stud services and $3,000 for each puppy he produces.

Serovich is resisting continued efforts to breed the dog, saying a veterinarian has recommended Duffy be neutered for medical reasons.
