MILTON — Property owners in the Milton Area School District learned earlier this week that they will receive $68 less in state gambling revenue-related tax relief than earlier thought.

However, residents in the Midd-West and Selingrove school districts will receive a slightly higher tax break than initial reports indicated, according to a recently updated compilation of the state’s school districts and the estimated amount of tax relief per homestead and farmstead.

A prior estimate for Midd-West School District of a $173 tax break per homestead or farmstead has been updated to $175. Selinsgrove’s previous estimate of $129 increases to $134.

Estimates for other districts did not change.

The final amount of property tax relief from gaming funds will be determined by each school district after setting the 2008-2009 real estate tax rate, said Michael Race, deputy press secretary of the state Department of Education.

Earlier this week, business manager Brian Snyder told the Milton school board that the district was notified its portion of funds from the gambling taxes would be about $68 less than initial estimates. He said Northumberland and Union counties had underestimated the number of properties eligible for the farmstead-homestead reduction.

A change in the number of eligible properties in each district could result in a change in the estimated refund, Race said.

The latest estimates show residents in the Milton school district to receive a gaming revenue tax break of $174.
