Talk about good timing.

When Koda, a Siberian husky, recently escaped from his outdoor kennel, owner Janet Yerger of Port Trevorton called The Daily Item’s classified department to place an advertisement for her lost dog.

Yvonne Roadarmel also called the classifieds, but she wanted to put in an advertisement for a large, white and tan husky she found in the Port Trevorton area.

“It was really something how that worked out,” Yerger said. “When I was on the phone with The Daily Item, they were talking about a husky in the background ... and what do you know, here was Yvonne calling in with the dog.”

Yerger’s granddaughters discovered Koda was missing on Tuesday afternoon.

“My daughter-in-law was worried that no one would ever return him. He is too pretty,” Yerger said. He’s also high-energy, but lovable. “We used to have him in the house when he was little and even years later, he remembered that he was supposed to stay in the kitchen.”

Roadarmel has been rescuing dogs for years. So when a neighbor spotted Koda on his yard, she was the first to be called for advice.

“[Koda] didn’t have a collar on,” Roadarmel said. “So I got pictures of the dog and took him to Brookline boarding dog kennel so at least he would have a warm bed and be well fed.” Roadarmel often places classifieds and reports lost dogs to veterinary offices.

Most dogs she rescues are strays. “My life is never quiet,” she said.

Roadarmel and her husband are currently the owners of nine dogs, and they provide a home for seven additional rescue dogs.

“In today’s economy, when most dogs are found, the owners never show up,” Roadarmel said.

But she’s glad Koda returned to his owner. “It could have been really bad. When I called Janet, she was so thankful.”

Yerger never imagined Koda would get out of his kennel.

“I could hardly believe it,” she said. “When we get him out of the kennel, we have him on a leash. We didn’t put a collar on him because we never even thought he be able to get out.”

After Koda returned home, Yerger went out and bought him a harness and a tag.
