SUNBURY — A sentence modification hearing for the Freeburg man serving a state prison term for stealing more than $100,000 from Congregation Beth El was postponed Thursday because he hadn’t been brought to the local jail.

Shelley R. Kolbert, 60, was sentenced in May to serve a 15-month to 36-month sentence in prison, return a piece of the synagogue’s Arc and make $82,000 in restitution to the Sunbury congregation for the thefts that took place in 2007 when he was overseeing construction of the Arch Street synagogue.

After the sentence was handed down by Judge William H. Wiest, a deal was reached between assistant district attorney Ann Targonski and Kolbert, represented by Williamsport attorney Michael Groulx that tools he bought with the stolen funds would be turned over to the congregation.

Targonski asked that Kolbert be held at the Northumberland County jail until the hearing on the sentence modification, but a miscommunication occurred and he was transferred to State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill near Harrisburg.

Wiest said he’ll hold a videoconferencing hearing at a later date so Kolbert will not have to be brought to the Sunbury courtroom.
