SUNBURY -- Donors have contributed more than $2,000 to help cover the cost of fireworks Saturday night in Sunbury.
Organizers plan to continue the "Shoot the Works" fund drive through July 19. In addition to the fireworks, the funds will be used for free items distributed to children during the Sunbury Celebration.
Festivities continue this evening with a quadraleague baseball tournament at the North Fourth Street recreation complex and a splash hop from 7:15 to 9:45 at the Sunbury pool. The splash hop will feature free soda and hot dogs and music.
Events on Saturday begin at 10 a.m. with games, rides and food vendors in the Fort Discovery parking lot. Hurr's Ice Cream will provide free ice cream for youths younger than 18. A Selinsgrove Speedway car show will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. along North Fourth Street. Wee Willy the Clown will hand out free glow-in-the-dark necklaces from 7 to 8. Radio station 94KX sound track will entertain from 9:30 to 10:30, and the fireworks display will be presented at 9:30.
The final event of the celebration is the seventh annual soapbox derby, held Sunday at Market and South 10th streets. The event is for boys and girls ages 8 to 12 with a weight limit of 125 pounds. Soapbox cars will be provided by area businesses and individuals. Registration forms are available at the mayor's office and police department from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. All racers must sign and weigh in no later than 10:30 a.m. Races will start at 11 with all partiipants receiving a medallion and free T-shirt, sponsored by Sunbury Textile Mills. Trophies, sponsored by the New Paul Stine Chevrolet Olds Inc., a New Mark Monaghan Dealership, will be presented at the end of the race.
