SELINSGROVE — The Selinsgrove Elementary School is in line to get a $17.75 million upgrade to accommodate the inclusion of all-day kindergarten and address accessibility and space issues.

Preliminary renovation plans for the 45-year-old building on the Selinsgrove Area School District campus were reviewed Monday by the board of directors.

Prepared by Harrisburg architectural engineering consultants EI Associates, the plans call for adding 24 rooms to the existing 18-classroom building, a new gymnasium and expanding the cafeteria.

The Selinsgrove Elementary is a grades 1 and 2 school where 364 students were enrolled as of Monday.

The Jackson-Penn Elementary School on Route 204 will, for the first time this year, have a full-day kindergarten class, which as of Monday had an enrollment of 186 students.

The 53-year-old building lacks space, with only eight classrooms and two modular classrooms being used this year.

So, instead of renovating two elementary schools, Superintendent Frederick Johnson said the board wants to upgrade the Selinsgrove Elementary to accommodate all three grades and bring the entire student population to the campus.

“We’re hoping by this time next year to be turning some earth,” Mr. Johnson said.

Although no firm decisions have been made regarding the project, there has been some talk of converting Jackson-Penn into administration offices or a storage facility

The next step will be a formal hearing Sept. 17, during which reasons for the multimillion renovation project will be outlined by the board.
