LEWISBURG — M-C Federal Credit Union will become the first tenant in the redevelopment of the former Pennsylvania House property after the East Buffalo Township supervisors approved its plan Tuesday to renovate the vacant showroom building.
Credit union officials unveiled a plan last week to renovate the 15,987-square-foot showroom along St. Mary Street adjacent to the Lewisburg Area Recreation Park. Three drive-through lanes for two tellers and an ATM access will be provided. There will be 93 parking spaces for customers and 10 employees. The lot will be landscaped.
M-C Federal Credit Unit began in 1954 serving the employees of the former Merck & Co.’s Cherokee Plant, now Cherokee Pharmaceuticals, in Riverside. In 1988, the credit union began serving members outside of Merck and expanded into Bloomsburg, Danville, Berwick and Mount Carmel. It serves more than 11,000 members.
The new office will be the second Lewisburg location, joining the office at Evangelical Community Hospital.
Meridian Development Partners LLC, a New York City-based developer, purchased the 40-acre Pennsylvania House property, off Route 15, more than two years ago after the manufacturing plant closed in 2005. Approximately 425 jobs were lost when La-Z-Boy, the owner of Pennsylvania House, moved its facilities to China.
Retail, health care and recreation are among the uses being considered by Meridian for the property.
