NORTHUMBERLAND — Remembering 9/11 is just as important as remembering Pearl Harbor, Dick Simpson said, because it was the first time we were intentionally invaded here in mainland United States.

“I feel it’s important to remember these folks,” he said Tuesday, “and it helps the younger generation realize how devastating (it was) and what a part of history it is.”

Simpson, the American Legion Post 44 Commander, said the Legion will host a 9/11 ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday in King Street Park, Northumberland. It will be moved to the American Legion if there is inclement weather.

The Shikellamy Marching Braves will play before the ceremony at 6:30 p.m. as well as throughout the event.

Rep. Merle Phillips is featured as the event’s keynote speaker.

During the 9/11 ceremony, anyone who had family or loved ones killed in the attacks will be recognized, as well as anyone who has had loved ones killed in the War on Terrorism.

Simpson said those present who have served in the military since the War on Terrorism will also be recognized.

“We will pay honor to our local firemen and police officers and medical personnel,” Simpson said.

He also noted wreaths will be placed in front of the gazebo by representatives from both Northumberland and Point Township police and fire departments.

Boy Scout Troop 342 and Cub Pack 3342 from Christ United Methodist Church in Northumberland will line the sidewalk as the wreaths are being placed.

At the end, there will be a firing squad and Taps. Simpson said anyone interested in attending should bring a lawnchair.
