LEWISBURG — One would never guess Riley Toll began his interest in photography only a few months ago. The various nature scenes — the bridges, flowers, butterflies, mushrooms, buildings — all are clear, sharp and visually enjoyable.
“I started taking photos this summer,” the 18-year-old Lewisburg Area High School senior said on Friday. “People liked them so I kept going.”
He held his first showing of the digital prints recently at Mya’s Cafe on Market Street and sold a few pieces. The art will be on display until the end of the month.
The showing was part of his independent study for school, where he’s focusing on the photography hobby. His next idea for the course is incorporating painting with the artwork.
He has taken more than 800 photos and said each one he shows off is signed and framed. He hopes to hold more showings at the Arts Festival and possible other galleries.
But photography isn’t the only thing at which Toll excels.
Born and raised in Canada, Toll was the No. 1 gymnast on the east coast in Canada for tumbling. He now teaches children gymnastics at the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority gymnasium.
“I teach kids the basics,” he said, although noting he could do a double flip. The children learn beginning steps, such as cartwheels.
Before moving to Lewisburg in the ninth grade, Toll said he lived in Canada with his family, moving to various providences throughout his childhood.
“It was like a culture shock,” he said laughing. “School was different. The amount of kids here is way less.”
He continues to keep relationships with friends in Canada and goes back to visit each year. Several of his photos are from his visits there.
Toll also is a member of the French Club and Ski Club. He is a member of the track team, where he competes in the long jump and triple jump, and is a member of the diving team.
Toll hopes after graduation he will be able to attend either Susquehanna University or Lehigh University, where he would major in photography or business.
