MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS — State police who approached a rural Snyder County home to serve a warrant on a summary violation discovered two marijuana growing operations in neighboring houses.

State police have announced the arrests of five people following the discoveries on Aug. 25.

Montoursville trooper Tyson Havens said he was assisting Selinsgrove troopers on Aug. 25 in serving a warrant for a summary violation after they had received information about someone residing at 3982 Buckwheat Valley Road.

Kent Leroy Berkheimer, 25, and his wife, Brandy Lynn Berkheimer, 23, and Tasha Marie Lightner, 26, all living at the home, were charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. They each were released on $25,000 bail.

“We encountered, initially, a little bit of marijuana, and then discovered a growing operation,” Havens said.

The indoor growing operation wasn’t in production, he said.

“They had harvested the plants already,” Havens said. “They hadn’t started a new set of plants yet.”

Havens’ partner, Scott Davis, discovered another growing operation at a neighboring house.

Three different active marijuana growing rooms were discovered in that house, occupied by Bobby Gunnell and his girlfriend, Sharon Ruhl. Marijuana plants were also growing outside. Further details were unavailable Tuesday.

A search at the first residence led to the discovery of a 2-foot by 4-foot framed growing area with numerous grow lights, a timer, and fans in the basement; potting soil and fertilizer in the living room; and a plastic bag and pill bottle containing marijuana, dried marijuana leaves, a book titled “Grow Great Marijuana” and five marijuana pipes on top of a bedroom dresser.

Troopers said they also found a Taurus Millenium PT140 .40-caliber pistol and Keltec P-32 .32-caliber pistol underneath a mattress in the bedroom. In a closet they said they found numerous marijuana pipes and gun boxes for the handguns, and in a locked filing cabinet, a glass jar with marijuana seeds.

There was also a photograph of Brandy Berkheimer and Lightner passing a loaded marijuana pipe.

Three plastic bags of marijuana and a digital scale with marijuana residue was found during a search of a Pontiac Sunfire registered to the Berkheimers.

A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 4.
