SUNBURY

Police from five Valley municipalities and troopers from three state police stations converged on Sunbury late Friday night after reports of gunshots near Lincoln and North Fourth streets.

At least two people called city police after hearing what they thought was gunfire around 9:30 p.m.

Unconfirmed reports said that a man wearing a woolly or puffy black coat and blue jeans was seen carrying a handgun, running from the Memorial Acres housing complex, and that shots were heard.

The Turkey Hill convenience store at the corner of Lincoln and North Fourth streets was put in immediate lockdown and began turning away customers. Two workers inside the store said they were not allowed to speak to reporters.

State police troopers from Stonington, Milton and Selinsgrove, and officers from Northumberland, Selinsgrove, Shamokin Dam and Point Township helped Sunbury police in the search, which concentrated on the alleys that ran parallel to North Fourth Street.

“We really saturated the area,” Sunbury police officer Jamie Quinn said around 10:30 p.m. “But we didn’t find anyone.”

Quinn told Turkey Hill it could reopen the store at 10:45 p.m.

The investigation continues. No additional information was available at press time.
