Internationally known pianist tops bill

LEWISBURG -- Jazz pianist Bill Carrothers will perform in concert at Bucknell University on at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in Bucknell Hall.

The performance is free to the public as part of Bucknell University's ongoing Jazz at Bucknell First Wednesdays series.

Carrothers will be joined by Anthony Marino on bass and Phil Haynes on drums. This performance replaces one previously scheduled with pianist Fred Hersch.

A professional pianist for more than 25 years, Carrothers has played many concert venues extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. He headlined the prestigious Rising Star Tour throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland in October 2000, and has been a leader on 17 recordings, all of which have received critical acclaim.

The esteemed Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD states that "Carrothers is a class act, already endowed with a formidable breadth of experience, ... (he) lays bare the material and breaks it into pristine pieces. He seeks out new material which even the likes of Brad Mehldau haven't thought about ... (and uses) Keith Jarrett's acute melodic focus and concentration on the line. ... When he does Donna Lee, it's tremulously slow, whereas Barry Harris' Reets and I' is fast bebop done teasingly straight. The music works a truce between rough-and-ready ... and absolute finesse, and it feels like a real trio at work. More, please."

Some of Carrothers' many international awards include the 2004 grand prix de l'academie Charles Cros; the 2000 French Diapason d'Or de l'année; a German Schallplatten Preis; and Top 10 of the Year lists in 1999, 2000 and 2004.

His sideman credits have included some of the greatest names in jazz, including Joe Beck, Scott Colley, Buddy DeFranco, Dave Douglas, Curtis Fuller, Eric Gravatt, Drew Gress, Tim Hagans, Billy Higgins, Lee Konitz, James Moody, Gary Peacock, Dewey Redman, Charlie Rouse, James Spaulding, Bill Stewart, Ira Sullivan, Toots Thielemans and Benny Wallace.
