Wreath program plans to expand

NORTHUMBERLAND -- Wreaths for Warriors, an effort to lay wreaths on the graves of veterans in the Susquehanna Valley, is looking to expand its outreach and increase the number of wreaths that are placed this year.

The program began in 2006, inspired by the nationally recognized project, Wreaths Across America.

In 2006, 75 wreaths were placed on veterans' graves, mainly in Northumberland's Riverview Cemetery. In 2007, thanks to an increase in donations and with the help of local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, 650 wreaths were placed in several communities, including Sunbury, Selinsgrove, New Berlin, Milton, Shamokin Dam and Mifflinburg.

In 2007, the Susquehanna Garden Club donated 20 large wreaths, which were placed at military monuments and memorials across the Valley.

This year, Wreaths for Warriors will distribute wreaths to groups of volunteers at Kohl's Market on Route 147 in Point Township following a ceremony at 2 p.m. Dec. 7. The committee chose that date as a remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Many communities will hold ceremonies between 3 and 3:30 p.m., with placement of the wreaths following the ceremonies.

Wreaths for Warriors needs donations of time and money to expand its efforts. Donations may be sent to Joe Hutton, treasurer, 1451 Pleasant View Road, New Columbia, PA 17856.

Questions about the program may be directed to Chris Kerwin, chairman, at 850-0373 or John Deppen, publicity coordinator, at 473-0390 or 523-1155, ext. 2203.
