FREEBURG

A Freeburg woman suffered serious injuries Friday night when her car was struck by two vehicles on Route 35 in Washington Township, Snyder County.

Brittany Eshenaur, 21, was flown by helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after the 5:39 p.m. crash. Conditions of trauma patients are often not released for 24 hours, so Geisinger Medical Center at 10 p.m. Friday could not provide Eshenaur’s medical condition.

According to state police in Selinsgrove, Eshenaur was stopped in the southbound lane of Route 35 east of Freeburg, waiting to turn left. Her 1999 Ford Contour was struck from behind by a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Jeffrey Leitzel, of Richfield. The impact forced Eshenaur’s car into the northbound lane, where it was struck by a 2004 Jeep Liberty driven by Gary Carstettler, of Freeburg.

All accident victims were wearing seat belts, state police reported, including Carstettler’s passenger, Boneta Carstettler, of Freeburg.

Gary Carstettler suffered a minor injury, police report.

A Freeburg resident who asked to remain anonymous said she lives on the corner where the accident occurred, and heard a quick, loud succession of crashes, almost like a metallic pinball, “one car hitting another hitting another,” she said. “It was horrible.”

Police closed off half a mile of Route 35 to clear debris strewn over the road.

Assisting police at the scene were fire and rescue personnel from Freeburg Fire Department, Dauntless Hook and Ladder of Selinsgrove, and Sunbury.
