SELINSGROVE — A United Way campaign sign has gone missing from the corner of Market and Pine streets in Selinsgrove, and officials just want it back, no questions asked.
The campaign “thermometers,” shaped like a football field with yard lines to mark the amount of money the organization raises for its programs each year, are each worth a couple hundred dollars, according to Keri Albright, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way.
They are placed throughout the region to promote awareness of the organization’s support to various charitable organizations in the Valley.
It was last seen by staff a week ago, Albright said, and its absence was just noticed on Friday.
“We don’t have money to replace it,” she said. The signs were a one-time purchase and are maintained and updated annually, she added.
Since it was likely a prank, she said, “It’s not funny anymore. It’s just silly, and it’s stealing. It’s taking something from a great organization doing a lot of great work for its communities, when we’re struggling the most to raise money for the programs that we fund.”
She said the signs are heavy and awkward — approximately 4 1/2 feet tall and 3 1/2 feet wide.
Anyone who may have seen someone taking the sign, or anyone who will admit to taking the sign, is asked to call 988-0993.
“I won’t ask any questions,” Albright said. “And it’s awkward, so we will come and pick it up.”
