HERSHEY — Way to go, Rosie.
In an extraordinary feat of showmanship — but not surprisingly — Mifflinburg Area High School Marching Wildcats’ Drum Major Rosie Mazzamuto took the drum major trophy, beating out 26 other band leaders, at the Atlantic Coast Tournament of Bands on Sunday.
“It was an extraordinary accomplishment on her part,” said band director Matthew Wagner. She earned a near perfect score, 19.3 out of a possible 20.
All the same, he wasn’t surprised. The drum major trophy has become something of a tradition for Mifflinburg. They shoot for it, and they’ve hit a bull’s-eye five times in the past 10 years.
Wagner says it’s because they train in a symphonic, rather than military, style. “It’s more expressive. It better mirrors the emotion of the music being played,” he said.
“Rosie’s presence on the podium shows a higher level of conducting skill,” he added. “It’s more artistic, more professional.”
The main event at the competition, of course, was the ranking of the marching bands. The Marching Braves from Shikellamy High School, Sunbury, came in 11th with a score of 90.6, and the Mifflinburg band tied for 16th place with a score of 87.45, Wagner said.
Top honors went to the Brick Memorial High School band from Brick, N.J. Participants came from nine states. The competition finals were held in Hershey Stadium.
It isn’t over for Rosie, however.
“She’ll be one of the drum majors in the Tournament of Bands All Star Band in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Day,” Wagner said.
