Milton council seat comes down to write-ins

MILTON — A single write-in vote in the Nov. 3 election will decide who joins the Borough Council next month.

In the 5th Ward, Richard Specht received two write-in votes, assuring him of a two-year term on the council. Former Councilman Jim Callenberger and Charles Swartz each received one write-in vote.

According to Chuck Beck, borough manager, both men will be contacted to determine their interest in serving.

“If one isn’t interested, the other will get the seat,” Beck said.

However, if both men want to serve, he said, the matter will be turned over to the Northumberland County Board of Elections, which will conduct a coin-toss to determine the outcome.

“We’re hoping to save the county the trouble,” Beck said.

In the 2nd Ward, Bill Barr, who was appointed earlier this year to take Ken Johnson’s seat when Johnson was appointed to the Milton school board, received four write-in votes. Barr will hold the seat for two years. Four other people in the ward received one vote each.
