Unseasonably cold weather to continue, meteorologist says

SUNBURY — A windy, winter-like blast of cold, Canadian air will keep temperatures about 10 degrees below normal through Saturday, a regional meteorologist says.

There is also a good possibility that an Alberta Clipper will sweep through the Valley late tonight, depositing a dusting of snow on the ground, said Andrew Ulrich, a meteorologist with AccuWeather, in State College.

“Snow at this time of year is fairly unusual,” Ulrich said.

Four inches of snow fell on Nov. 19, 1955; a half-inch fell on Nov. 19, 1939, Ulrich said.

“There won’t be much accumulation of snow tonight, but it will be very cold today and for the rest of the week,” Ulrich said. “So if you have to be outside, dress in layers and be aware of the wind chill.”

It won’t warm up until Sunday, when the cold-air mass leaves the Valley and highs might reach the 40s. Even that, Ulrich said, is below normal.

Expect today’s high to only be 38, with winds blowing at 6 to 12 mph. The low will be around 26 degrees.

“The coldest day of the week will probably be Saturday, when the high will be 33 degrees,” Ulrich said.”

If there is any appreciable snow amount, Lewisburg Borough will be prepared to deal with it, borough manager Chad Smith said.

“We have had our salt stockpiled and it’s ready to go,” he said. “All of our equipment is functioning. Yes, we’d have to convert a few trucks that are now being used to pick up leaves. Put the snow plows on. But our staff is very experienced and within a few hours our vehicles could be out plowing the roads.”
