Single mom hopes for memorable holidays

LEWISBURG -- Being a single mother with two boys is proving to be difficult for a Lewisburg mother seeking assistance this holiday season from The Needy Family Fund.

The mom, who asked to remain anonymous, has lived in Lewisburg for four years and is raising her 15-year-old and 5-year-old sons alone. She is currently unemployed, on supplemental Social Security income and child support, but is finding it tough to make ends meet, especially during the holidays.

"Being a single mom, trying to pay the bills, and raise two kids ... it's hard," she said.

For her 5-year-old, she just wants to give him a good Christmas.

"He likes Legos, Nerf toys, Wii games," she says. "But he's not very picky, he'd be happy with anything, and I would be happy with anything for him, just so he can feel like he is really celebrating Christmas."

She wasn't sure what The Salvation Army could do for her oldest son, who is in high school, but she says she just wants them to be able to have a good holiday and one that he will remember.

This is the second year the family has applied for the Needy Family Fund, and she says last year she was pleased with a food basket. She hopes to get something similar this year, so that they will be able to put something nice on the table for Christmas dinner.

She is grateful for the help from The Salvation Army.

"I want to tell them thank you," she said, "You know, without them (The Salvation Army), it would be hard. It really would. So just thank you from my family."

So far, the Needy Family Fund has raised $1,175 through donations from Gary and Marie Grossman, of Middleburg, $500; Joseph and Lucille Lubeskie, of Kulpmont, $325; Quality Print Shop Inc., of Northumberland, $250; and various anonymous donations totaling $100.
