TURBOTVILLE — A check for $2,000 was recently given to Capt. Wayne Hawley, a Warrior Run firefighter who was partially paralyzed fighting an arson.
The money was raised by Holy Spirit Evangelical Lutheran Church, Turbotville, when it held its second annual Fall Festival in September on the grounds of Holy Spirit’s new church building, located along Route 44 between Turbotville and McEwensville.
The Fall Festival was designed to give nonprofit service organizations a platform to raise funds or to inform area residents about the services they provide.
“The public has been so supportive of our congregation during the construction of our new church building,” said festival co-chairman Steven Moll. “Now we would like to turn the table and do as much good for others as we can in one day.”
Holy Spirit Church members took on raising funds for Hawley through a chicken barbecue that day. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Northumberland County Chapter, matched the $1,000.00 raised during the barbecue. Many other local non-profit organizations were present that day as well.
The event was also an opportunity for the community to gather at the grounds of the new church building. Holy Spirit currently worships on Church Street in Turbotville. The congregation hopes to move into the new building in January.
