Christmas candlelight service set

SELINSGROVE -- The Christmas candlelight service at Susquehanna University will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Weber Chapel Auditorium. Music will begin at 7:15.

The theme is "Fear Not," which reflects on the words of the angel Gabriel to Mary and God's messengers to people burdened by fear today.

The annual service is considered one of the university's most cherished traditions. More than 1,600 people gather for the service, which includes carols, traditional readings, songs and prayers in celebration of the season.

The Rev. Mark William Radecke, university chaplain, will preach with the assistance of the Rev. Ted Keating, pastor of St. Pius X Church in Selinsgrove and spiritual adviser to Susquehanna's Catholic community. Music will be provided by the Masterworks Chorus, under the direction of Rodney Caldwell, associate professor of music and director of choral activities, and lecturer of music Judith White; university organist Marcox Krieger, assistant professor of music; a brass ensemble; and the Susquehanna University Handbell Choir.

In conjunction with the event, the Susquehanna University Neighborhood Council and the Center for Volunteer Programs are sponsoring their annual food drive. Donations of nonperishable foods will be accepted at the candlelight service and through Dec. 11. Collection boxes will be placed in numerous areas around campus, including under the Christmas trees in the lobby of Weber Chapel, in each residence hall, Mellon Lounge and in several locations throughout the Selinsgrove community.

Some of the most needed items are canned meats, evaporated milk, peanut butter, dried and canned fruit, canned soups, rice and pasta. Donations of personal-care items such as deodorant, soaps, toothbrushes and cleaning supplies also will be accepted. Donations will go to Haven Ministries, a homeless shelter in Sunbury.

Information is available by calling the Office of the Chaplain at 372-4303.
