TURBOTVILLE — Three of four schools in the Warrior Run School District received Keystone Achievement Awards for meeting adequate yearly progress based on the 2008 Pennsylvania State School Assessment reading and math tests.

The plaques were presented Monday night to Patricia Cross, senior high school principal; Jay Gordon, principal of the Turbotville Elementary School; and Susan Welteroth, principal of the Watsontown Elementary School, by Daniel Sheaffer, superintendent.

“The scores have improved greatly from five years ago,” Sheaffer said. “Our middle school just missed this year after doing well last year.”

He noted there had been gains in all scores, especially in math. “This shows the students are taking it very seriously,” he said.

Sheaffer thanked the board, administrators, teachers, students and community for supporting the testing program.

Board member Douglas Whitmoyer asked why the home and school associations were raising money for student breakfasts on the PSSA test days. “If this is so important, why doesn’t the district pay for it?” he asked. “We keep asking parents for more and more.”

Sheaffer said the administration had been criticized by previous boards for paying for breakfast for all students.

He also noted that not all students have a good breakfast at home before coming to school.

The board agreed to place the matter on the agenda for the January meeting.
