DANVILLE — If you miss the days of playing that sport in gym class that wasn’t really a sport, but now is a sport, then May 4 may be a date to remember.
Thanks to the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital’s third-floor employees, the first “Kicking it for the Kids” kickball tournament will be held in support of the Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger Medical Center.
Kickball is played like softball, only the pitcher rolls a large, bouncy ball toward a kicker, rather than a batter. When the ball is kicked into play, fielders may use it to bean base runners to get an out.
For some reason, kickball has become a sport that many adults find relaxing after a hard day’s work.
The event will be held at Hess Field in Danville, and teams will have eight to 11 members, Julie Gombert, of Danville, said.
Gombert works as a nurse on the third floor at the hospital and said employees are looking forward to the all-day affair.
The event will start at 7 a.m. and run until about 9 p.m. with the winning team receiving a trophy for its efforts.
Teams can consist of both men and women, and anyone younger than 16 must have parental consent.
“I wanted a way to raise money in a fun way for the Children’s Miracle Network and decided kickball was the best option,” Gombert said. “Geisinger has a health reward program, so it benefits our players as well.”
Response from the public has been great, Gombert said.
“People loved the idea,” she said. “Kickball is easy to play, and it could be open to more people because you don’t have to be an athlete to come out, play and have fun for a good cause.”
Food will be provided by McGuigan’s Pub, Sunbury, and it is $15 per player to register. Each player will receive a free T-shirt upon registration.
Gombert said she has been out and about in the Valley, speaking to various businesses about participating and donating to the Children’s Miracle Network.
“We decided to travel through the Valley because it is a huge part of our area,” she said. “This is a huge cause, and we want to get as many people involved with us as we can.”
