Proposed tire-burner clears hurdle

Public meeting set for May 2

LEWISBURG —  A draft plan approval for the White Deer Energy Project brings the tire-derived fuel plant another step closer to being in White Deer Township.

Next will be the public’s turn to ask questions and give opinions during a briefing and forum next week in Allenwood.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection published a draft plan approval in the March 30 edition of the Pennsylvania Bulletin, the commonwealth’s official gazette for information and rule-making, DEP spokesman Daniel Spadoni said.

On April 1, DEP announced the public hearing and meeting May 2 in Allenwood to explain the permitting process. Spadoni said the information was given to press in a release that day.

On May 2, “the applicant will explain the project and answer questions,” Spadoni said. That will be followed by a formal public hearing and then a question-and-answer period for the public.

Spadoni was emphatic that DEP has “not issued the air quality plan approval for the EnTire Logistics Plant in White Deer Township.”

In a notice of the DEP public hearing, it is referred to as “the proposed air quality plan approval submitted by EnTire Logistics of Milton.”

Organizations United for the Environment, a Valley environmental group, is preparing to make statements and ask questions about the proposed tire-burning facility, which it opposes, citing air pollution and volatile chemical release concerns.

The White Deer Energy Project is a $30 million, steam and power generation plant to be next to National Gypsum Co.’s West Milton building in Union County. It would burn old tires to generate 7 megawatts of electricity and steam for the adjacent National Gypsum plant.

National Gypsum is a partner with En-Tire Logistics, Emanuel Tire Co. and All4 Inc. on the project.
