Arbor Day in Mifflinburg: tree planting, certificate award

MIFFLINBURG -- Mifflinburg will receive its Ninth Year Tree City USA certificate Thursday, among highlights of the borough's Arbor Day celebrations.

The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the gazebo in the Mifflinburg Borough Park on North Fifth Street.

The Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service sponsor the Tree City USA program .

“Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest," said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns and provide environmental and economic benefits. A community, and its citizens, that recognize these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks.”

Shade Tree Commissioners Juergen Seefeldt and Mary Ann Williard will accept the certificates on the borough's behalf.

Also on the program, Mayor David Cooney will read Mifflinburg’s Arbor Day Proclamation, and Gerald Hoy, service forester for Union County, will demonstrate proper bare-root tree planting techniques to the students as they plant 16 trees. Union County doanted six of the trees as part of its bicentennial celebration.
