Wood-Mode resumes normal operations Wednesday

KREAMER — A mid-day crash and circuit malfunction kept 1,050 Wood-Mode employees off the job Tuesday, said Tom Morgensen, the company’s vice president of human resources. But repairs have been made, and the factory resumes normal operations Wednesday.

Power at the Snyder County plant was cut off after a one-vehicle crash on Route 522 at 11:15 a.m. Monday, Morgensen said. However, once power was restored, a faulty switch gear on the company’s internal circuit caused an electrical outage, which forced Wood-Mode to suspend operations for the day.

“We don’t have power to the plant and main office ... Our phone and computer systems are running on backup generators,” Morgensen said earlier Tuesday.

The company notified employees about Tuesday’s shutdown through local media and an internal hot line, he said.

While Wood-Mode customers may have had difficulties checking the status of orders Tuesday, “the delivery of the end product should not be affected,” he said.

The crash that set off the outage occurred near the intersection of Lisalyn Road, according to police.

Terry Beachel Jr., 32, of Thompsontown, was driving south on Route 522 when the utility trailer he was pulling began to sway and he lost control of his Ford F350 truck, police said. The truck went down an embankment and struck a utility pole, knocking out power to much of the Kreamer area.

About 380 customers were without power following the crash, said Joe Nixon, a spokesman for PPL. Power was restored to those customers by 5:45 p.m. Monday.

Beachel was taken to Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
