Convent sells for $4.5M

DANVILLE — DANVILLE — Geisinger System Services is now the owner of Holy Family Convent.

The property sold for $4.5 million, according to paperwork been filed in the office of the Montour County recorder of deeds.

The deed, involving two tracts from the Society of the Sisters of Christian Charity of New Jersey, was filed Dec. 20. The sisters owned the 19-acre property since 1898.

The closing took place Dec. 20 in Geisinger’s Foss Home, according to a Geisinger spokesman.

Geisinger System Services plans to use vacant floors of the main building of the complex, at 1 Montour St., for offices, eventually housing 300 to 400 employees.

At the closing, Geisinger System Services took immediate possession/occupancy of the fifth and sixth floors of the residential building, according to Bob Davies, chief support services officer of Geisinger Health System.

During the next several months, the floors will be converted to general office space and most likely for information technology.

The renovated floors and additional parking lot are expected to be completed and occupied this fall, according to Davies.

The sisters will continue to occupy the remainder of the space in the residential building and chapel for up to three years.

The property had been for sale for about a year and a half.

During a hearing in Danville to change the zoning of the tract from multi-family residential to commercial use, a Geisinger official said the sisters were working on what it would cost to move about 147 graves and how to do it. The cemetery there had been used from 1927-47.

About 60 retired nuns living there will move to their motherhouse in New Jersey. They have up to three years to relocate.

The building was constructed in 1969.

The convent did not return a request for comment Monday.
