WEST MILTON — The Tire Burner Team meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at United in Christ Lutheran Church, Lewisburg, has been postponed because of the extreme cold weather until the same time on Jan. 14.
The meeting will feature a letter-writing campaign to pressure National Gypsum to end its partnership with En-Tire Logistics which plans to build a tire incinerator on Old Rt. 15 that will burn 100 million pounds of shredded tires per year to provide steam and electricity to National Gypsum’s wallboard paper plant. The plant is approved by the DEP to release thousands of pounds of toxic chemicals and harmful particulates into the air every year and is sited a mile away from White Deer Elementary School.
The group will also begin working on plans for a “Tire-palooza” community event in the spring to raise awareness about the dangers of burning tires, and alternatives for recycling and reusing tires. Volunteers and event planners are needed to help plan the event which will feature games, education, and fun activities for all ages.
Volunteers will also receive training on how to do community outreach for petition signatures, canvassing and tabling at farmers markets, flea markets and local events. Over 2000 print and online signatures have been collected as of the end of December, with a goal of reaching 3000.
United in Christ is located at 1875 Churches Rd., Lewisburg, one of the “twin churches” located 2 miles west of West Milton off of Crossroads Dr. For more information contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 610-568-2254.
