Umbrella used to fend off chainsaw-wielding 76-year-old

TURBOTVILLE — A chainsaw-wielding 76-year old man was charged with aggravated assault after cutting through a man’s door and chasing him through his yard.

Ronald Lee Tanner, 59, of Turbotville, used an umbrella to successfully fend off Guy Allen Black, 76, of Turbotville, after Black used the chainsaw and an axe to break down Tanner’s door following a dispute.

Black had been living with Tanner, the owner of a home at 5395 Susquehanna Trail, Delaware Township, Northumberland County. Black left the property on Oct. 19 after a disagreement with Tanner, who changed the exterior locks on the door after Black’s departure. On Oct. 20, at about 10:09 a.m., Black returned to the residence and became “extremely irate” when could not enter the residence, according to a report filed by Milton state police.

Black entered the basement through an unlocked exterior door and attempted to enter through a locked wooden door at the top of the basement steps. He began striking the door with an axe while Tanner held the door closed from the opposite side. Black then revved a chainsaw and sawed through the door, at which point Tanner and his brother retreated from the property to the front yard.

Black followed the two to the yard, where he threatened to cut Tanner with the running chainsaw.

Black swung at Tanner, striking a finger on his right hand. The chainsaw was moving towards Tanner’s chest, but got caught on the fabric of his sweatshirt, which stopped the chain.

Tanner then grabbed an umbrella from his truck and knocked Black backwards and onto the ground with it. Tanner then pinned Black in place until state police arrived on the scene.

Black was arraigned that day and placed in Northumberland County Prison on $100,000 bail.

Milton State Police had no further update on the case Sunday night.

Tanner was not listed by state police as needing medical treatment following the incident.
