Three injured in Route 54 accident

DANVILLE — A four-car crash Friday afternoon sent three people to the hospital after a pickup truck trying to merge clipped a passenger car that then went careening into two other vehicles.

Route 54 was closed for a period while rescue crews helped the injured from the wreckage.

Police said the crash happened when a pickup truck attempted to merge into the right lane of traffic, but instead crashed into the red Dodge Neon in front of it. The Neon then hit two cars in front of it.

A female driver and passenger from the Neon were taken by Danville Ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center. Another injured person was also taken away by ambulance. The back of the Neon was heavily damaged. The bumper was knocked loose, the back window was shattered and the gas cap area was pushed out.

The car in front of the Neon, a blue Sebring, had its back bumper dented.

Firefighters used brooms to sweep up the debris left from the crash and dumped it in the Neon.

Route 54 was reduced to one lane of traffic before opening up again.

The Neon was towed by West End Services.

Danville Fire Police, Danville Police Department and Danville Ambulance all responded.
