House fire kills 91-year-old woman in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE — Fire crews say an elderly woman died in a fire in a northeastern Pennsylvania home.

Crews in Luzerne County were called to the Wilkes-Barre home shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday.

Fire Chief Jay Delaney said they arrived within four minutes but found heavy fire inside the three-story home and were unable to get the woman out.

The (Wilkes-Barre) Citizens' Voice says acting county coroner Bill Lisman identified the victim as 91-year-old Elizabeth Kovach.

Neighbors said Kovach died in the home in which she had been born and raised.

Fire investigators are trying to find out what started the blaze.
