Expect increased gridlock in Danville during Bloomsburg fair week

— DANVILLE – Get ready for more gridlock on Route 54.

For four to five days and during part of the Bloomsburg Fair, a section of Route 54 will be closed from Sept. 26 through Sept. 30 in Danville, Dan Knorr, Danville administrator of governmental affairs, told the Montour County Commissioners on Tuesday.

He said the closure, from Routes 54 and 11 to the Susquehanna River, is related to construction of the missing link to Danville’s flood control system along Mahoning Creek.

With that section of Route 54 closed, traffic will be funneled onto Mill Street for four to five days, Knorr said.

“We keep telling people traffic used to come down Mill and it will be just like old times,” he said. Traffic currently flows onto Route 54 and under the tunnel of the Danville-Riverside Bridge.

Because of closing part of Route 54, completion of the streetscape project in Danville will be extended until mid or late October, he said. “There is no way they will be able to finish it after being closed for four days,” he said. Knorr said the change in that project will “not be as big an inconvenience” as closing part of Route 54.

Commissioners Chairman Trevor Finn asked if PennDOT could place signs in Sunbury and Elysburg directing people heading to the fair to avoid Danville on those days.

“Maybe they could take (Interstate) 80 and go around. They need to let people know pretty far out that there will be major congestion,” Commissioners Vice Chairman Jack Gerst said.
