Elytte Barbour's court date moved to Thursday

— SUNBURY — Accused murderer Elytte Barbour was scheduled to be in court today, but will appear on Thursday instead to ask that an expert be appointed to evaluate the competency of the 22-year-old Selinsgrove man.

Barbour was arrested Dec. 6 after Sunbury police said he strangled Troy LaFerrara, 42, of Port Trevorton, while his wife, Miranda Barbour, 19, stabbed the man to death.

Northumberland County Judge Charles Saylor signed the order granting the hearing for today, but Elytte Barbour’s appearance was moved to Thursday.

Sunbury attorney James Best will ask the court to appoint an expert to evaluate his client’s competency.

The petition indicates that Best believes the former North Carolina resident should be evaluated. The petition also states that it does not contain any information or verification by Elytte Barbour that he should be evaluated.

Best does not think his client objects to the examination, the petition said.

If a defendant does object to an incompetency examination being performed, a hearing is necessary to determine whether a prima facie question of incompetency exists.

Elytte Barbour is scheduled to be in court at 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

A pre-trial conference that was scheduled for Elytte Barbour for Friday was canceled, but Miranda Barbour’s pre-trial conference will begin at 1:15 p.m. Friday.
