Montour County squad building a Farm Show dynasty

HARRISBURG — A Montour County-based team on Wednesday night won its second consecutive grand championship in the sheep-to-shawl competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show and sixth since 2005.

“It feels really great,” said Libby Beiler, of Liberty Township, and a member of the squad named Time Warp. “We strive every year to create something really new and unique and different. Your goal is to top what you did the year before.”

Joining Beiler on Time Warp — known from 2003 to 2008 as Carl and the Not So Lazy Kates — are Carl Geissinger, Jeff Johnstonbaugh, Ivy Allgeier, Katherine Dashner and Emily Kephart.

During the 2½-hour competition, a team shears its sheep and crafts the wool into a wearable shawl that displays a theme chosen by the squad, Beiler said. Time Warp’s theme this year was “The Rail Trail,” which aimed to combine the colors seen on local rail trails, like the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail, Beiler said.

Key elements of a good sheep to shawl sheep include wool color and length, softness and lanolin content, Beiler said.
