SUNBURY — The two Republican congressmen representing the Valley are bucking overwhelming results in national polls that find most Americans favor background checks for all gun buyers.
An independent Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday shows that 92 percent of Americans support background checks for all gun buyers. That poll also found 91 percent support for universal background checks among voters in a household with a gun.
A CBS/New York Times poll released last week showed similar results.
Among other measures since the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., President Barack Obama is advocating for universal background checks of all gun buyers.
But U.S. Reps. Lou Barletta, R-11, Hazleton, a former mayor, and Tom Marino, R-10, Cogan Station, a former federal prosecutor, said they did not support any idea that might infringe upon the rights of gun owners.
