$8,000 donated to World's Largest Banana Split event

SELINSGROVE - Organizers of the May 4 event to set the world record by building a 5-mile banana split in the borough received an $8,000 donation from the Selinsgrove Moose Wednesday.

The products needed to create a 5-mile long dessert to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association will cost about $90,000 and require hundreds of volunteers to build, event spokesman Chris Schlieder said.

To date, the group seeking to top the Guiness Book of World Records of 4.55 miles for the largest banana split set in Selinsgrove on April 30, 1988 has raised about $10,000 and received donations of 700 pounds of peanuts from Pardoes Perky Peanuts and four buses from Sharitz Bus Service to shuttle the estimated 26,000 visitors expected to attend the event.

Much more is needed, including 5,000 gallons of ice cream; 500 gallons each of topping; 26,000 cherries; 15,000 ounces of whipped cream and labor.

A web site has been established for ticket sales and donations and will be availeble Monday at www.worldslongestbananasplit.com.
