Liquor control will be one of the weekend topics in state Legislature

HARRISBURG — What could be a lengthy debate over liquor legislation is likely in the Pennsylvania Senate.

Senators will convene Friday afternoon as the Legislature grinds toward Sunday’s expected adjournment for the summer.

The proposed privatization of liquor and wine sales is one of Gov. Tom Corbett’s top legislative priorities, as is his proposal to generate billions of dollars for transportation projects by increasing a wholesale tax on motor fuels.

The two issues are indirectly linked — Senate Republicans have made a transportation bill a top priority while House GOP leaders are leading efforts to privatize the state-controlled liquor and wine system.

The Senate plans to debate the latest bill to permit the private sale of wine and liquor. The House is expected to debate the latest transportation funding plan on Saturday.
