Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus leap from horse-drawn sleigh near Bedford

BEDFORD — State police say a holiday ceremony was marred when horses pulling a sleigh were spooked, injuring the driver and forcing the actors portraying Santa and Mrs. Claus to jump to safety.

The incident happened about 4:40 p.m. Sunday at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, about 90 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

State police say the horses were apparently spooked by band music and bolted, causing a wheeled sleigh they were pulling to crash.

The driver, identified as Ernie Alwine, of Misty Haven Carriage in Somerset County, fell under the sleigh and was taken to a hospital for cuts to his face.

Resort general manager S. Lee Bowden said that the actors portraying the Clauses — who are not being identified — "bailed out."

Mrs. Claus reportedly twisted her ankle in the process.
