— SUNBURY — Jennifer can’t say enough good things about the Salvation Army and its programs to help the less fortunate.

One of those programs is the Needy Family Fund, sponsored each year by The Daily Item, Sunbury Broadcasting Corp. and Susquehanna Bank, and she has applied for the first time for a Christmas food basket.

Jennifer and her husband, both 59, are having a tough time making ends meet. They live on his disability of $755 a month. Their monthly bills include $415 in rent for their Sunbury home, $220 for utilities and $43 for cable.

“We’ve never applied for a Christmas basket before,” she said. “This is my first time for Christmas.”

“We’re grateful we can receive this,” she added. “The Salvation Army really helps people who are needy, who don’t have a lot of places to turn to for aid.”

The Needy Family Fund raises money during the holidays to aid the Valley’s less fortunate. It is administered by Salvation Army citadels in Sunbury and Milton. Donations also can be left with Susquehanna Bank offices in Sunbury, Selinsgrove, Milton, Lewisburg, Shamokin West, Shamokin East, Kulpmont, Mount Carmel and Pillow.

This year’s goal is $75,000. Today’s balance is $31,558.
