LEWISBURG — WINFIELD — A fire of unknown origins broke out at Kuhns Bros. Lumber Firewood Division at 6569 Stein Lane late Wednesday afternoon, sending plumes of thick black smoke out of the main storage structure and blanketing surrounding acres of farmland.

A crew of about 10 people worked at the facility, but their shift had ended, said an employee who asked that his name not be used. Neighbors saw the smoke and contacted Snyder County 911. The facility lies just south of the Snyder-Union County line in Jackson Township.

Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene at about 4:30 and within the hour had most of the hot spots under control. A section of the building’s wall, near where some smaller flames could be seen, was torn away so that water could be sprayed inside.

A fireman who was inside the building said the blaze seemed to be confined to a Dumpster and some pallets piled high with cut firewood.

About 35 fire and rescue personnel from New Berlin, Selinsgrove, Hummels Wharf, Winfield and Penns Creek responded to the alarm.

Officials at the scene would not comment on the extent of the damage.
